Living Well: B-Healthy Farmers Market

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Baptist Health continues its third summer of offering fresh produce. You'll find local products and food trucks at its B-Healthy Farmers Market.

One farmer who provides vegetables for the market is working to bring fresh food to low income communities.

Richard Tanner with Tanner Farms is the man behind Farm Box 2 Family.

"It's a program about helping other farmers and helping people in need," he explains.

It did so well last year that Tanner and Baptist Health are offering it again this year. Some restaurants are also getting involved.

"These chefs are actually going out into the communities and teaching people how to cook with the food," he says.

Tanner has found that many people in low income neighborhoods have never tried certain vegetables, cooked it, or simply don't have access to fresh produce.

It's one of the reasons Baptist Health sponsors the program and launched the B-Healthy Farmers Market three years ago.

"Tremendous growth. I would even say it's doubled since our first year," says Carrie Teeter with Baptist Health.

It's grown so much that they've added farmers markets to their hospitals in North Little Rock and Conway, all featuring Arkansas farmers.

"These farmers pick these produce usually the day before, even the night before, and they bring it out and it is just, you don't even have to cook it, it is that good," she says.

It's the fresh taste of home grown food.

The B-Healthy Farmers Market is available through the end of July as follows:

  • Tuesdays - 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock
  • Wednesdays - 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Baptist Health Medical Center-Conway
