Weigh-in day today. Yikes. It’s not like I was surprised about how much I weigh, but when Donna and the photographer are both watching the numbers pop up, it’s a little humiliating. Kind of reinforces that I haven’t been doing a whole lot to keep myself in shape. My diet is merely OK. I don’t eat a whole lot of red meat or processed foods, but I do enjoy cooking a nice meal, and most nice meals are made with a lot of fat, carbs and salt. Oh well, my wife is leaning toward becoming a vegetarian. Maybe eating veggies more often will help change my normal diet. But my biggest challenge is exercising on a daily basis. If I don’t have somebody there to either encourage me or compete against me, I don’t want to go work out. I love playing soccer, ultimate Frisbee, football, tennis, anything competitive. And I don’t mind going on a long run with somebody who will run with me. But if it’s just me and the open road, or just me and the gym, it usually ends up just me and the couch.
The first partial week is over, I’ve logged 18 miles on the Walkstation in the past three days. I’m starting to get used to the soreness in my upper legs after I finish. The more I move around, the better I feel. It’s probably an unintentional benefit, but it does encourage me to keep moving after I get off the Walkstation. By the way, I did the math, and if we end the Walkstation experiment at the beginning of November, I will be walking 318 miles. For perspective, that’s like walking from Little Rock to Memphis, and back. Granted, it’s not all at once, but that’s still a lot of mileage. Hopefully that will make a difference in that number on the scale. And don’t think I’m about to tell you what that number is….
