If you wait all year to put on your ice skates and glide across a fresh, frozen canvas to celebrate the holidays now you get your chance! The Arvest River Market on Ice is open for business in downtown Little Rock. And since it's Little Rock's first outdoor skating rink in years the chilly winter wonderland got a very warm reception.
Skaters of all shapes and sizes explored the frozen phenemenon that popped up in the River Market Saturday morning. The city of Little Rock partnered with Arvest Bank and others in the community to bring a professional ice rink company to town for the job. This rink is Little Rock's first outdoor skating rink in more than a decade. Gretchen Hall with the city said, "I think this just adds to the holiday festivities throughout and around central Arkansas. We've got a great mix of entertainment built in here in the River Market district but this outdoor ice rink is kind of a novelty to Southerners."
Don't worry about warm days melting away the fun. A 2-ton air conditioner will keep the 7,000 gallons of frozen water nice and cold. And those with skating experience say there's something special about an outdoor rink. Lauren Banko said, "when I come here I can feel the outdoors and I can feel the wind and it's just amazing."
The rink is open until January 9th and and the $8 entry fee covers your skate rental. Click the link next to this story to find out about the hours the rink will be open.
