More than 200 at Jonesboro center to lose jobs

A call center in Jonesboro has announced plans to close its doors this spring, laying off all 223 workers.

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — A call center in Jonesboro has announced plans to close its doors this spring, laying off all 223 workers.

StarTek made the announcement late Monday. A company spokeswoman tells the Jonesboro Sun that the layoffs were because of a change in work requirements, but she declined to elaborate.

The company, which handles customer-service calls for different industries, moved into its location on Caraway Road in 2008.

Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin says he was notified late Monday about the layoffs. He says city officials will work with the company and other leaders to help the people who will be laid off.

When the company opened four years ago, it said it planned to hire up to 500 workers in Jonesboro.
