Canoeing is just one of 11 year old Drift Yelverton's favorite activities at Camp Aldergate. This is his sixth year at MDA camp.

One of Drift's camp counselors, Jordan Hinson, says it’s tough to keep him out of the water

"Anything that has to do with water, Drift is on it,” Hinson said. “So canoeing he his always in the canoe always paddling never takes a break always wants to race the canoes"

It’s tough for Drift to decide what his favorite camp activity is.

"Ummm…archery...nature...and I forgot what else," Drift said.

Drift may not be the most talkative camper, but he has no shortage of friends.

"He is very energetic,” Nathan Nelson said. “He was shy. He is shy when first come up to him... He will hang on somebody like, I don't know them, but we say it’s ok Drift, they’re a part of us now. You gotta make friends. He is just a great kid"

Following a morning on the canoe, Drift moved onto another one of his favorite activities, nature camp. A game quickly got underway, pitting the knowledge of two teams of campers against each other about wildlife. Drift was definitely not shy about taking charge of his team's answers.

Drift's diagnosed condition of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy does not slow him down at camp, which is why for him and the other campers, this is one of their favorite weeks of the year.

"It’s a place where a kid gets to come out and be himself and not worry about what other people are doing,” Nelson said. “Just be himself, play have fun and when their parents come on Friday, they don't want to leave. They’re like, ‘it’s fun here. We do all kinds of stuff. We don't want to go home, Mom and Dad.’"
