Potato salad, mashed potatoes, and of course, french friesf we love them all but peeling all those potatoes with a knife or a peeler can be time consuming and dangerous. But the makers of Tater Mitts claim their high-tech gloves can peel a potato in just 8 seconds. So are they a Deal or a Dud?
Karle Johnson, a Purple Cow chef, is about to put Tater Mitts through our Deal or Dud test.
The commercial says to "simply rub and with a few strokes and look, just 8 seconds of actual time and presto a perfectly peeled potato."
What the commercial doesn't show or tell you is that you must first boil the potatoes for five to six minutes. As we wait, we put Karle to work with a peeler and a knife. The goal is to see how long it takes him to peel a potato the old fashioned way.
The Tater Mitts claim all you need to peel a perfect potato is 8 seconds. The commercial says, "It's the hassle free way to peel potato, after potato, after potato. You won't believe your eyes."
The time came to see for ourselves. After the steam cleared, we doused the potatoes with cold water, as per the instructions. Karle then slid the Tater Mitts on and prepared for battle.
"I've never seen anything like this before in my life," says Karle.
In position with potato in hand, we initiated the test. "On your mark, get set.... GO! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.... STOP!"
Karle sais, "Eight seconds is completely off. I mean this thing is not done by any means."
The quick peeling potato gloves are not so quick according to Karle and this cook is ready to serve his verdict. "Absolutely, they're 100 percent DUD."
The Tater Mitts do work, just not in 8 seconds. If you use them at least you can avoid cuts and nicks. As for the cost they are $11.49, plus shipping and handling on
amazon.com. You also get a free vegetable slicer that makes perfect sized french fries.
