The makers of the Ove Glove say this heavy duty glove will extend the amount of time you have to handle those hot pots, sizzling pans, and even those scorching light bulbs. But is the Ove Glove a Deal or a Dud?
Everyday around 3:30pm the kitchen at the Butcher Shop comes to life. Grills are fired up, ovens fill with sweltering heat and hickory flavored briquettes ignite.
Kevin asks: "How hot do these grills and these ovens get?"
"I’d say anywhere from 375 to 400." To protect him from the intense heat, line cook, William Bradley uses tongs to help him transport red hot pans from the oven to the grill. “ I've got burned pretty bad," Bradley said.
Bradley has tried oven mitts, even a red heat resistant handle but every now and then he gets tagged by the heat.
So we asked him to put the Ove Glove through the Deal or Dud test.
It's called the Ove Glove, a hot surface handler that supposedly can withstand extreme heat up to 540 degrees.
The makers say the glove won't permanently protect you from fire or heat but it will give you more time when handling a hot object.
Bradley slips it on and then using just the Ove Glove grabs a scalding hot pan out of the 500 degree convection oven.
He calmly walks over to the grill and casually puts it down. Kevin asks: “Is that better than the tongs?” Bradley says: “Yeah, this is a lot better... it's a lot safer.” "You can hardly feel anything when you put your hand in there to grab a hot pan. You can't feel anything, but with the tongs you can feel it all the way up your arm," Bradley said.
The Ove Glove also has a non-slip silicone grip and is flame resistant. Bradley agrees to put that claim to the test. Just don't try this at home.
"Yeah, I still don't feel any heat right here. Q: Still no heat? A: Yeah still no heat. Q: And now? A: Still no heat."
So what does this line chef, who by the way makes a mean Cajun shrimp dish, think of the Ove Glove? “I'd call it definitely a deal. Definitely a deal," Bradley said.
