Every week, Regina Pryor has an appointment that she refuses to miss.

"I hear about it. I read about it,” Pryor said. “I feel that they are getting bolder."

Pryor is talking about the alarming number of women recently raped, stalked or attacked. She doesn't want to be the next victim. So she went out and bought a nine millimeter handgun.

“I feel as if I can defend myself if attacked," Pryor said.
For most women, arming themselves with a gun is not their first choice. But with the recent uptick in crime - that's quickly changing.

According to Gun Owners of America, at least 17 million American women now own firearms.

Roughly 44% of women either own or have access to a gun, and each day in this country, as many as 560 women use a gun to protect themselves against a sexual assault.

"A lot of tragic events are happening in our world today and they're happening right here in own backyard."

Tom Dupriest is the owner and lead instructor at Shoothouse USA. He says that in the past five months, business has been booming.

"We're seeing a tremendous increase in women coming to the range on of of their own," Dupriest said. "Women are taking a proactive step to protect and defend themselves. They're not waiting until they are a victim or until a friend or family member is a victim."

Dupriest stresses constant training is critical. The goal is to make one's response to a threatening situation intuitive or second nature. Which is why Pryor never misses a practice session at the range.

"The first intent is to not have to use the gun,” Pryor said. “But if need be, I need to have that skill and ability to use it and use it properly."

I applaud the individuals that carry concealed who are training for the possible need for self defense. Most know the important part in training is the "mind set". A person may know how to run their gun and be a good shot but without the proper mind set you are defenseless. Tom Dupriest has very good defense classes and instructors. I would recommend the Shoothouse USA highly. My experience with other trainers around Little Rock have not been as informative.

I for one think that Arkansas as well as all of the other states that currently are not, should be an "Open Carry" state. Maybe if the thug can see with their own eye's that someone is carrying, then they will not be victimized. But then, some of the idiot thugs are pretty stupid.

There is a huge back log of applicants is why it is taking a long time. When I got mine back in the 80's, it took me all of 3 days.

Hi jim40401- The background check is just what it is. State Police run everything on you.. It took my husband and myself from 10/2011 until 12/2011 to get our conceal licenses. It was worth the wait..

Being a guy that shot on a small arms team I'll tell you that pistol will be no protection against a 30 caliber at 200 yards. Nor will it be protection against a real criminal. They will shoot you in the back and then do what they want. Stopping violence by creating more potential violence is not the answer. I don't know what the answer is. I sure wish some one would come up with a fool proof one. I would hate for anyone's innocent family to be killed in a cross fire by one of these gun toting fools. If it was one of mine I'm sure I'd be locked up a long time.

My wife and I both went and started the process for getting our CCW's. I am currently waiting on the State Police. I do not understand why it takes so long to get approved.

I agree. Being a woman, I carry at all times...

More people need concealed carry permits (and then need to carry at all times). If enough of these dirtbags get shoot when trying to mug or rape someone, we will see a decrease in these type crimes.
