LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Board of Education is to decide the fate of two southwest Little Rock charter schools.
The board's monthly meeting is Monday morning and members are to discuss Dreamland Academy of Performing and Communication Arts and Covenant Keepers College Preparatory Charter School.
Covenant Keepers is being questioned about an audit that found Superintendent Valarie Tatum made interest-bearing loans to the school that may violate ethics laws. Tatum told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (http://bit.ly/LMjixU) that the interest is to offset penalties for cashing in her accounts to ensure a cash flow to keep the school operating.
Dreamland Academy is being questioned about a history of low student test scores. Superintendent Brendly Clark told the newspaper that literacy scores have improved — but acknowledges that only third-graders showed improvement in math scores.
