The Little Rock School Board passed tougher restrictions for students caught in class with a cell phone.

A group of Little Rock teachers and parents want to toughen the penalties for students caught using cell phones or other electronic devices at school.

Under the proposal if your child is caught with a cell phone during class they could be in serious trouble.

Teachers say cell phones are the number one problem they deal with in the Little Rock School District. They say that it takes time away from teaching and that's why a group of teacher and parents want tougher penalties for kids who are caught using cell phones and other electronic devices during the school day.

When this proposal first came in front of the board of directors two weeks ago some members had concerns, but they say they do see the need for tougher rules.

While some say as long as students don't use their phones during class they should be able to have them turned off in their backpacks in case of emergency, but overall the focus during the school day should be on planner.

Golfdude - "Tighten the rules, add suspension, and if a cell phone is confiscated, no return to the kid or the parents-gone for good. Too many parents come up with lame excuses for their kid to have a cell phone to start with and let's face it-kids will be kids and they are always going to push the envelope and test the teachers and the rules. Parents should not make the rules in school, the teachers should." There were many, many lives saved in Columbine BECAUSE KIDS HAD A CELL PHONE !! Look, the good old days of kids walking to school safely, getting off the school bus and home safely, playing outside after dark, and just IN GENERAL are GONE. There are so many freaks out there now that prey on our kids. Christ, take the damn phone away and give to the kid after school - give three warnings, and you are suspended for a few days. My kid was caught with her phone in class and the phone was taken away and turned off by teacher. My kid was in the wrong, but the phone was MINE with MY personal info on the phone and the school vice-principle took it upon herself to go through MY phone - saying she could do whatever she wanted with MY phone. To top it off, the school would not give me MY phone back for two weeks, refused my request for the sims card, and all the while vice-principle was going through MY personal contact info on the phone. She said she could do what ever she wanted with MY phone and personal information. WRONG WRONG WRONG. Schools better beware, there ARE civil rights, and school rules do not trump them. You may have a few lawsuits on your hands, and these lawsuits are being WON by PARENTS all over the country. Vice Principle later lied about the who situation -(what a great role model, right?) but that is another story in our sorry sorry school system we have)

The problem would be much smaller if some teachers didn't turn a blind eye to the law. My daughter had a teacher that let the students know when security was going to do a sweep of the school and held phones for the students in her class that had them.

I will still allow my child to take her phone and they will not be taking it away. She is a senior and will be getting out of school early because she has the credits she needs. She going to work when she is out of school so what am I suppose to do worry about her getting to work without someone messing with her until she gets off work until 10:00 maybe 10:30. I DON'T THINK SO!

I don't think one parent supports texting/talking in class. However most support phones off and not visable. If seen, take it! CONTROL YOUR CLASS! SHOW NO FEAR OF STUDENTS!

Your LRSD Educational Tax Dollars hard at work. Rediculous. Yes, the LRSD School Board Members are again getting to the important issues! Impeach them immediately and put some real parents and teachers on there instead of the "wanna be" BS politicians!

Back in my day, early 90s. If student had things/objects in their hands that was causing a distraction. The teacher walked over and took the item from the student. Place it on her/his desk and simply said. You may retreive it at the end of class or end of the school day. No distruptions. Simple control of his/her class.

The whole issue boils down to teachers allowing one or 2 student to break the rule, in a matter of time, the entire class is out of control.

How many of your kids rode the bus, walk to school, live next to child predators, live in neighboorhoods infested with drugs. Look at the location of Central High School.....hummmm. However, I went to school with no cell phone in the early 90s. I could catch rides with neighboors, friends parent and my parent didn't worry about my safety. If each of you could change society, then we can go back to all the WITHOUTS! I AGREE, phones should not be present in class. however if off and tucked away, what's the problem? some of the teachers, allow phones and if one child see them using it, rest asure the rest of the class will. the head of the class must set examples. Done use your phone in class and DO NOT allow students to do the same. All it takes in one bad apple, whether it is teacher or child.
