Desde que Napoleón Bonaparte invadió España y capturó al rey Fernando VII (1808), se vivía en Chile un ambiente de conspiraciones criollas para formar una Junta de Gobierno, que por fin lograron instalar el 18 de setiembre de 1810. Lamentablemente, al poco tiempo estalló la guerra civil entre los dos caudillos patriotas más destacados: José Miguel Carrera (partidario de un régimen monárquico constitucional) y Bernardo O'Higgins (partidario de un régimen republicano).
