Kelly Dudzik: "If you really want to see exactly how your home is losing energy, and costing you money you can hire a company to come in and do one of these tests. They'll hook up this fan, and we really, as soon as you turned on this fan, we felt it get a lot more humid in here, even though the air conditioning is on. What's happening?"
Bret Curry: "Yeah, Kelly, well, this is a blower door machine and it's really a simple machine and process. What we're doing is we're simulating a 20 mile an hour wind on the surface area of this house, and we're pulling a vacuum, and so any place where there's unwanted or unmanaged air infiltration in this dwelling. We're able to pull in mother nature's hot air today, it's 98 degrees outside, and we're pulling that air into this house, right now."
Kelly Dudzik: "What are some of the problem areas you found in this house, so far?"
Bret Curry: "Well, one of the areas is an attic access staircase and then an old whole house ventilation system and then any place there are switches and receptacles air is coming in there. Also, plumbing penetrations from under the sinks."
Kelly Dudzik: "So these are common problems a lot of homeowners are facing."
Bret Curry: "If the houses aren't built properly, they have these very same problems."
Kelly Dudzik: "Coming up next week, we will show you some cheap and easy things you can do at your house, right now, to help you start saving money on your energy bill."
