This children's book is a visual retelling of "The Spider and the Fly" with a bit of Hansel and Gretel thrown in.
"The Inevitability of Spiders and Flies" is a picture book created and illustrated by Sally Nixon for her BFA thesis project at UALR.
It is a take on Hansel and Gretel, but also follows the theme of Mary Howitt's classic poem, The Spider and the Fly–hence the title. It is not your typical children's book, but Nixon's intention is for children and adults of all ages to read and enjoy it. The book consists of a poem written by her sister and 36 pages of illustrations which were done in pen with some watercolor.
In order to retain full control over the story, Nixon decided to self-publish "The Inevitability of Spiders and Flies," and established an account (click here) on Kickstarter to help her do it. Late last week she met her goal!
Her plan is to get the book printed, which will cost about $3,500. The rest of the money will go toward rewards, materials, and shipping. If she exceeds her goal, she will use the money to print more copies and perhaps fund her next book project.
