Smell and Parkinson’s Disease
If you can't smell like you used to listen up!  Hawaiian researchers found your risk of getting Parkinson’s disease increases as much as 500 percent if you lose the sense of smell.  Doctors had more than 2,000 men take a brief odor identification test.  At the start of the study all the men were Parkinson’s free.  Over the course of eight years 35 men developed the degenerative disorder.  Parkinson’s is caused by the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells.

Sleeping Problems
Kids with sleeping problems now could face emotional problems down the road.  A new University of London study says children who sleep less are more likely to report anxiety, depression and aggression later in life.  Doctors had parents rate the sleep and behaviors of more than 2,000 4 to 16 year olds.  Children who slept less had higher scores on scales measuring emotional and behavioral problems.  Doctors also found a link between the problems and overtiredness.

Medicine Mix-ups
Parents you'll also want to hear about this study about medicine mix-ups and kids in the hospital.  It finds bad drug reactions and accidental overdoses hurt one out of every 15 children in the hospital.  But doctors with the "national initiative for children's healthcare quality" also say that number fell four-percent if they used data supplied by hospital staffers.  For this study though doctors used a new monitoring method 15 "triggers" on a patient's chart suggesting possible drug-related harm including specific antidotes for drug overdoses, suspicious side effects and certain lab tests.
