Berlin Heart

The odds just got better for children and babies facing heart transplants.

The FDA approved a tiny heart pump called the Berlin heart.

A study done at Texas Children's Hospital shows it is effective in maintaining proper blood flow in babies and small children.

Patients who received the Berlin heart lived longer on the device, and were more likely to receive a transplant or recover heart function then children maintained on more traditional support.

Ear cleaning

There are proper ways to clean your ears, but one thing you shouldn't do is clean inside them.

Doctor Erika Woodson at Cleveland Clinic says you may damage or rupture the ear drum while using a cotton swab.

Doctor Woodson suggest for people who get a lot of wax buildup in their ears to use an over the counter wax softener or baby oil.

Teens and Smoking

Fewer teens are smoking now then a decade ago.

The CDC says there's been an eleven year downward trend among middle and high school students.

Health officials say in order to get kids to kick the habit, they suggest re-focusing programs to help young people be tobacco-free.

The study findings appear in the CDC's "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report."
