Chronic acid reflux and sleep; summer heat can be deadly; olive oil and breast cancer connection

Researchers say chronic acid reflux can wake you up at night without even causing heartburn. Doctors found adults with acid reflux woke up an average of three times per night.

Researchers placed a probe in their esophagus overnight to monitor the reflux episodes. Doctors say even though they tested a small group of people, they believe acid reflux may be contributing to poor sleep more often than suspected.

Summer heat can be deadly

Extreme summer heat can be more than uncomfortable, it can be deadly. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the elderly and young people are most susceptible to extreme heat.

Doctors say there are a number of ways to prevent the heat from causing deaths or illnesses.
  • You can schedule your outdoor activities early in the morning or early evening.
  • Take regular breaks in shady areas or indoors, which helps your body temperature to recover.
  • Avoid direct sunlight whenever possible

Possible link between olive oil and breast cancer protection

Spanish researchers say they've found a possible link between virgin olive oil and breast cancer protection. Researchers decoded mechanisms operating within breast cancer tumor cells. They demonstrated virgin olive oil was associated with a higher incidence of benign breast tumors.

Experts also found a regular intake of virgin olive oil, characteristic of the Mediterranean diet, is associated with low incidences of specific types of cancer.

Doctor on Call

Laquita White Hall writes, “I'm 31 years old and I have a lot of moles developing. Is this just because I’m getting older or do I need to be worried?”

Dr. Oksana Melnyk from Baptist Health Family Clinic says, “As a person grows older and is exposed to sunlight, the skin changes. Most people have some skin marks, such as freckles and moles, which may multiply or darken over time. But do keep in mind, you have to see your doctor to check your moles, especially when they are growing fast.”
