Dental Plaque and Cancer

The plaque that lurks on your teeth and gums may increase your risk of dying from cancer.

Researcher studied 1400 people for 24 years.

During the study, 50 people died - 35 of them from cancer.

Scientists looked at their dental-plaque buildup, tartar, gum disease and tooth loss.

They found the individuals who died had more dental plaque covering larger surface areas of their teeth than those who didn't.

Meditation and Brain

Getting a few hours of meditation training may change your brain for the better.

Researchers randomly assigned 68 undergrad students to either a meditation or a relaxation-training group.

They discovered people developed changes in the white matter of their brain after learning the "mindfulness mediation" method.

This involves periods of intense focus and concentration.

The findings suggest short-term meditation improves self-control, mood and stress in people.

Tick bites and allergies

A sudden allergy to meat may be the result of a tick bite.

That's what doctors at the University of Virginia are researching a new food allergy used by a single tick bite.

They believe the culprit could be the Lone Star Tick, commonly found in the southeast.

Doctors looked at people who ate red meat then developed hives three hours later.

Researchers are still trying to figure out what causes the allergy.
