Family Health: Staying Active

Start slow if it's been a while seen you've exercised.
It's never too late to start exercising, but doctors say -- if you're over 50 -- concentrate on slow steady increments to get to your physical goals. Exercising for older adults is more about staying active than setting records.

Doctors say consult your physician and a trainer if it's been a while since you've exercised regularly, but the most important thing is - to make sure you keep moving.

"You actually do better if you stay active and you stay fit. The joints want to be moved, they want to be loaded and worked. If you sit around, you rust, so you definitely want to get out there and move around," says Dr. Mark Schickendantz, MD, Orthopaedic Surgery with the Cleveland Clinic.

Doctors recommends a regimen of walking combined with push-ups and sit-ups as a way to ease yourself into a physical fitness program.

Speaking of running, it's time to sign up for this year's Komen Race for the Cure. Mark your calendar because the race is Saturday, October 19th starting in downtown Little Rock.

Race organizers have added some new stuff this year. For starters Arkansas' Susan G. Komen for the Cure has a blog (click here). They also have a Twitter page and Facebook page, they're on Instagram and there's a hashtag (#komer-ar).
