Flu virus and pigs

The state department of health is warning Arkansans about county fairs and the h3n2 flu virus.

The virus has been found in both people and pigs in a number of states.

Currently there are no known cases of the disease associated with animals in Arkansas.

State health officials say it's safe to go to the fair just be smart and use good hygiene.

Live stock inspectors have also been cautioned to be proactive in determining illness in pigs.

Catherine’s House

A development center for first-time pregnant teens has re-opened in Little Rock.

"Catherine's House" provides educational and personal support to pregnant teens as well as young people who are at-risk - like first time juvenile offenders.

It closed back in 2006, but now the center is back open.

And is helping teens learn parenting skills and case management for school success.

Catherine's house currently has 20 slots open for teen moms.

Catherine's house is located on 12th street near Woodrow just three blocks from central high school.

Meditation and Loneliness

A simple form of meditation may stave off feelings of loneliness and it also may cut the body's inflammatory response.

California and Pennsylvania researchers found older adults who participated in an eight week mindfulness-based stress reduction program reported a reduced sense of loneliness based on an established ratings scale.

Blood tests also indicated a significant decrease in the expression of inflammation-related genes which can trigger serious illness.
