New ACH ER opens

Arkansas Children’s Hospital is now seeing patients in its new emergency room.

Other clinics will start seeing patients in that same wing - throughout the month of July.

The 258,000 square foot south wing will offer the new emergency room, an ear nose and throat clinic, and a cardiovascular ICU among other things.

The new south wing adds 54 inpatient beds to the hospital's current total of 316.

Sunscreen Pill

Scientists say they are close to developing a sunscreen pill.

Scientists are hoping to combine u-v blocking chemicals found in sea coral with a product in development called "Scenesse" that increases the melanin in your skin to make the so-called "sunscreen pill."

But don't hold your breath - Scenesse is still in FDA trials - and at least two years from the market.

The pills are even farther away, at lease five years away from being
So for now, we'll have to stick with the lotions and sprays.

Vitamin D and bone fractures

Vitamin D can help lower the risk of bone fractures if taken properly.

According to the food and nutrition board people over 70 should consume 800 international units of vitamin d a day.

A new study showed taking less than that amount per day has no effect on bone-fracture risk.

When people take 800 units or more their risk of hip fracture was lowered by 30% and the risk of other bone fractures by 14%.
