Pork warning, belly fat in men and weak bones

A warning about what's been called "the other white meat."

A study by a consumer reports magazine says some pork purchased in grocery and specialty stores contained high levels of a bacterium that causes food poisoning.

To make matters worse, much of the bacteria samples were resistant to antibiotics.

The report says the magazine tested almost 150 pork chops and 50 samples of ground pork for harmful bacteria. The samples came from a wide range of stores in six American cities.

The cities and stores were not named.

"It really doesn't surprise me, and the reason for it is because the majority of the pork that's found in this country is all processed in the same place. Y'know, a lot if it is raised in one particular region, a lot of it's slaughtered in the same area and processed there. So y'know, the fact that that amount of it is all being contaminated, it's basically coming from a similar source, so I can totally believe it."

The magazine also found ground pork was more likely than pork chops to carry the bacterium.

Obesity and weak bones in men

We all know that excess fat is unhealthy and can increase the risk for we've all heard that excess belly fat increases the risk for heart disease and diabetes, but new research finds it can also hurt your bones.

More than 37 million American men are obese, and we've all heard about the health problems associated with carrying excess belly fat, including heart disease and diabetes.

New research presented at a meeting of radiologists reveals that excess deep belly fat can also weaken men’s bones.

Researchers studied 35 obese men, taking images of their bones and noting where their body fat was distributed.

Obese men whose fat settled as deep belly fat had weaker bones compared to obese men whose fat was distributed under their skin. And men with more muscle mass had stronger bones.

There are simple actions men can take to fight the negative effects of deep belly fat. Topping the list is losing weight. Limit calorie intake and burn more calories by performing daily physical activity such as walking.

It's also important to build more lean muscle mass -- working out with weights can help with this. The study showed that men with more muscle had stronger bones. Plus lean muscle increases the burning power of your body's metabolism.
