Premature Babies

The state of Arkansas earned a "D" on the latest "March Of Dimes Premature Birth" report card.

The report shows Arkansas' pre-term birth rate is 13.2%.

The goal is to reduce that number by 9.6% by the year 2020.

Health officials say nearly 500,000 babies are born too soon each year.

Overall, the United States got a grade of "C".

The U.S. preterm birth rate dropped for the fifth consecutive year in 2011 to 11.7% - the lowest in a decade - giving thousands more babies a healthy start in life and saving billions in health and social costs.

Vision and iPads

Digital tablets, such as the iPad and Kindle, can boost reading speeds in people with certain types of eye diseases.

Researchers found reading speed increased by more than forty words per minute when using an iPad with an eighteen point font setting, and on average, twelve words a minute using a kindle with an eighteen point font.

Patients with the poorest vision showed the most improvement in reading speed when using tablets compared with print books or newspapers.

The team believes the contrast between words and the back-lit screen was is one of reasons why.
