The translational research institute at UAMS has awarded ten researchers nearly $500,000 for pilot studies.
UAMS says the money will give scientists the resources they need to make meaningful discoveries - that will benefit the people of Arkansas and the United States.
Results of these pilot studies will be used to pursue larger research grants.
Post Flight Fainting
People who faint shortly after air travel could have a potentially fatal blockage in their lung known as a pulmonary embolism.
Researchers examined 500 patients who went to the ER for a pulmonary embolism over a five year period.
They found nearly half of those whose primary complaint was fainting - had recently been on a flight.
Researchers pointed out long-distance flights can increase people's risk for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
Kids and Organic Foods
A new report from the American Academy Of Pediatrics says there is no added nutritional value for kids eating organic food.
And no clinical benefit to avoiding pesticides.
AAP researchers analyzed the scientific evidence surrounding organic produce, dairy products, and meat.
They found nutritional differences between organic and conventional produce to be minimal.
AAP researchers also say there are also no nutritional or clinically relevant differences between organic and conventional milk.
