Women and heart attacks
A new study shows more middle-aged women are suffering heart attacks in recent years. UCLA researchers looked at data on heart attacks between 1988 and 1994 then again between 1999 and 2004. In both cases men had more heart attacks than women, but the gap between the two is smaller in the more recent time period. Many risk factors can lead to a heart attack including obesity, smoking and diabetes.
Weight loss teamwork
It turns out teamwork can really help you drop a couple of sizes. A study out of Pennsylvania shows people who enroll in a weight loss program with a relative or a friend tend to drop more weight. The research also shows if your weight loss partner is shedding more pounds then you will likely see even more weight drop. Researchers say weight loss teams are more likely to encourage each other and to have a specific weight loss plan.
Cell phones and brain tumors
The world health organization will soon announce that long-term cell phone use is linked to a higher risk of developing brain cancer. They surveyed 1300 people in 13 countries. Among those who used cell phones for a decade or longer researchers found a significantly increased risk for brain tumors. The WHO is expected to recommend parents restrict cell phone use by children and for adults to use hands-free devices. The official results of the study are expected by year's end.
Doctor on call: prostate screening
Q: When should adult men start having there psa checked? I'm 60 and just had a prostate cancer operation.
John,
Sherwood
A: Dr. Oksana Melnyk from Baptist Health Family Clinic says recommendations for screenings vary. Some say yearly screening for men over age 50, and some advise men who are at a higher risk begin screening at age 40 or 45. Others caution against routine screening. However, there is general agreement that men should be informed about the potential risks and benefits of psa screening before being tested. Currently, Medicare provides coverage for an annual psa test - for all men age 50 and older.
