200-300 votes not counted in Lonoke County

"The vote is the most precious thing we have other than our own lives," said incumbent Lonoke County Tax Assessor Jack McNally. He thought he'd won his reelection bid by just four votes. Similarly, Circuit Clerk Denise Brown thought she'd lost her race by 121 votes, and Sheriff Candidate John Staley thought he'd gotten enough votes to enter into a runoff.

Just one problem -- the Lonoke County Election Commission says between 200 and 300 votes from the Magness Township precinct, just North of Cabot, were never counted.

"Whether they voted for me or my opponent - they voted," said McNally, "and then somehow someone here in our courthouse dropped the ball."

"We made a mistake on this," said Election Commission Chairman Tim Blair. "We acknowledge that."

Here's how the election commission thinks the problem happened: votes are stored on small disks called P.E.B's. The commission thinks the P.E.B's from the Magness precinct were misplaced, and therefore, those votes were never counted.

The election commission caught the mistake while double-checking their count the next morning. As a result, they now plan to publicly recount every single vote for every single race Friday night.

"We want everybody to have confidence in what we're doing," said Blair, "and the only way to do that is just to do it out in the open."

That's just fine with the candidates -- even the ones who thought they'd already won.

Said McNally, "I don't know if it's going to help me or hurt me but every vote counts, and these 300 people were almost discounted, you know?"

The public is invited to watch the vote recount Friday night. It'll take place at the Lonoke County Courthouse Annex at 6.

I can tell you who is responsible and why it keeps happening. The lonoke county clerk is half responsible and the election commission carries the other half. It should be a conflict of interest for the clerk to be involved in any way in an election that includes the lonoke county clerk on the ballot. The current clerk has been in office too long. Already knows all the tricks to changing the votes and already gotten lazy. The man that the citizens of our county chose to run against the current clerk already has a history of being part of the problem. He sat on the election commission, so he knows how to change the votes before he evens see's the inside of the clerks office. So great job, a guaranteed 2 more years of corruption.

Oh, and how was it that mnay of the races shown on news websites(except for Fox 16)listed the candidates in the order they ended up placing in the "election" instead of the way they were listed on the ballot?!? Odd, how could they have known the outcome?? One last thing, someone should compare the number of voters that "came out" this primary to the numbers that came out in 2010. Strange that the republicans had just about as many, if not more, than the TOTAL amount of voters from 2010. I think it was around 3400 TOTAL in 2010...but Tuesday there were reportedly 4000+ republicans, and about 1900 democrats. This wasn't a major national election, Romney pretty much has the nomination, so republicans really don't have a lot to vote on, besdies their local offices. Just a thought....

I,too, have issues with Lonoke County, especially when it comes to elections! Funny how there is ALWAYS a problem with AT LEAST one polling station & their machines. I have ALSO heard that with enough money, you could pay someone to tamper with the machines & change the voting results. Every election, seems like Lonoke County is the last to broadcast their returns, why is that? I just wonder why it's not an independent agency coming in to count the votes, and why are they waiting until 6 pm tonight?Do they need time to "fix" items & outcomes BEFORE this public facade they are making a production out of (so their friends can be placed in office)? I agree, the "good ole boys" need to go!Just because someone is born and raised in "the neighborhood" doesn't make them the right choice for office. Just because they or their family have money, doesn't mean they are QUALIFIED to hold a political position, it just means they have the money to manipulate (fill in the blank). I am just sick to death of it all! I also heard that absentee ballots have not all been counted, that some votes were counted twice(or more) and others weren't counted AT ALL(besides Magness Creek). So many times the RIGHT person does not get elected because those few "in control" can "fix" things to suit their wishes or needs. So tired of the corruption & behind closed doors meetings that elected officials feel we are too stupid or have no right to know about, even though it may involve OUR tax dollars. Sorry for rambling, but I am totally fired up!And yes, some of my choices won-out & out, so I am not complaining because of one individual race, it is the WHOLE process that is tainted and tampered with every time. But you KNOW that they will NEVER admit to wrong-doing. Until an independent group comes in & investigates, we will never be told different. We will never have our voices heard at election time. We will never have the appropriate people in office. If I didn't own my home & could sell it I'd move!

What do you want to bet the majority of them are Republican votes? It seems the only way the Dems can win anymore is to lose ballots or get their dead relatives to vote, twice!

I was waiting for the results for the election after midnight on the election night, so I used the search mode on Yahoo, what did I find, nothing but errors from previous years from the lonoke county elections....seems to be a trend. How can this keep going on, and who is responsible....is the equipment/people/appointments what????
