LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Republicans say they'll hold a special convention next week to pick a candidate for a state Senate seat after the party's nominee died from a heart attack.
The party announced Thursday that the special convention for the Senate District 23 nomination will be held July 27 at the Hot Springs Convention Center. The party's 35-member executive committee will serve as the convention's nominating body.
Tommy Caubble, the party's nominee for the seat, died earlier this month after suffering a heart attack. He was challenging Democratic Rep. Jerry Brown for the Senate seat.
Ronald Caldwell, a real estate investor and the former owner of a lumber company, announced his candidacy for the nomination on Wednesday. A party spokeswoman said he is the only announced candidate for the nomination.
