Monday, state leaders get back to work on new laws that could impact your life. Two big ones on the agenda this week: carrying guns in church and taking drug tests before getting unemployment benefits.

Monday afternoon, the Arkansas Senate is expected to pass the Church Protection Act of 2013 which would allow churches to decide whether to permit those with conceal carry licenses to bring guns inside their buildings.

The bill's sponsor says the church would also be allowed to decide who can carry a gun inside.

"If you're not allowed to conceal carry and there's a terrible situation, one of the responses that I've heard is to throw hymnals. And, this would allow people with concealed carry permits that are, you know, carrying other places, too, to allow them to possibly carry in church," says State Senator Bryan King.

If the Senate passes the bill, it moves on to the House.

Also this week, the Senate Committee on Public Health, Welfare and Labor will consider a bill which would require those who want to receive unemployment benefits to be tested for illegal drug use.

"There will be some cost. It's a random, it's going to be a random drug test, so the cost won't be significant. I actually think it will end up saving quite a bit of money because hopefully people will with that threat of being drug tested, they'll get clean at least long enough to find employment," says State Senator Jeremy Hutchinson.

Hutchinson is confident the Senate will pass the bill. He says it could face more challenges in the House.

Apparently, the government has decided that having an ever growing segment of the population living off of various social problems is fine. So, we need to think about more long term solutions. I remember when pregnancy tests required a lab to perform them as well as blood sugar for diabetics, and now we have inexpensive, easy tests to do both. We need to invest in developing the same type of tests for drugs and require EVERYONE on social programs to take them in order to receive every payment. A positive test could deny them any benefits for 3 or 6 months, or whatever period legislated. Initially, it would probably cost more but the long term savings would be worth it. Tobacco and alcohol products should have their taxes increased to pay for the costs incurred by society (cancer, COPD, disability, car wrecks, prison sentences...) Law abiding citizens should not have support drug addicts, nor should they subsidize legal addictions.

The proposed legislation does in fact include random drug screenings for all elected officials (state, county & local) as well as all public employees (state, county & local).

The church I attend allows certain people to carry. Not to mention, several LEO's attend as well. They can carry just about anywhere. Wasn't there a church robbed last year while services were going on?

I own several guns. I have a permit. I go to church. I am on disability, but not because I'm fat. Heart disease mostly. Haven't drank alcohol since I can't remember when. Don't do illegal drugs either. You can test my blood or my urine any time you wish. You won't find anything. But if you are going to test me, test everyone else too! Welfare, food stamps, HUD. Great post wp! I know some people getting "crazy checks", and most faked it. I also know people that lived on their children's crazy checks while they sat around on their arses. I know a single father that lived on his sons check, and I know he smokes the green. I know a couple that lived on their son's crazy check, and I suspect they did drugs too. Now, all 3 of them get a crazy check. Living off the government teat seems to be getting out of hand. Me? I worked for my SS disability since I was 15. And I served Honorably in the US Army for my VA disability. I suppose I'm smart enough to get a crazy check, but it's not my style. My wife has had lifelong problems with anxiety and depression; but she is going to wait 4 more years and just get her regular SS retirement benefits. Yes, drug test all of them! Agree with 1gmama also! Lord knows we have enough drunks on the bench, and in the legislature!

I can understand the argument on this. Those receiving unemployment benefits have indeed at one time worked in order to receive the benefit. I also agree that those that are sucking up welfare checks left and right, food stamps and other govt. assistance need to be drug tested as well. I also say that not only do you have to actively seek employment, you have to actually take a job that is offered to you. It may not be the amount of pay you want or the job you want, but it is a job.

how about you drug test those who are on welfare. Those on unemployment actually worked for their unemployment checks and their employers paid the tax. Stop extending unemployment benefits and then they'll pass an employer mandated drug test to get a job. Barking up the wrong tree there idiots. WELFARE recipients who sit around popping out babies every 10 months should be the ones who get drug tested! Fat azzes on disability b/c they're too fat, should be drug tested. Those who draw disability b/c they say they have a "bad back" but can still manage to have sex and get pregnant and raise a kid/s, should be drug tested. If you can have sex and have a child and raise it, then you're healthy enough to get off your butt and get a job. People who fake being crazy and receive a crazy check, should be drug tested, etc etc.. As for guns in church, if the individual church says it's okay, then it should be okay.
