LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The prosecutor who negotiated a plea deal that freed the West Memphis Three has wrapped up the Democratic Party's nomination for an eastern Arkansas congressional seat.
Scott Ellington defeated state Rep. Clark Hall in a 1st District runoff. Ellington had finished just short of a majority in the May 22 primary.
Ellington negotiated the deal that let three men plead guilty to the 1993 killings of three West Memphis Cub Scouts and be sentenced to time served. Hall had tried to make it an issue during the runoff.
The prosecutor billed himself as a fresh face not indoctrinated by party politics. Hall touted his experience in public office.
Ellington will face incumbent congressman Rick Crawford in the Nov. 6 general election. Crawford did not have an opponent in the primary.
