LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas House has voted to move forward with a proposal that would repeal a tax break for truckers that's set to take effect this year.
By an 81-15 vote on Thursday, the House approved a resolution to introduce the proposed repeal. The measure needed at least 67 votes to be considered during the fiscal session. The resolution now heads to the Senate, where it needs at least 24 votes to move forward.
The tax break takes effect in July and was part of a highway plan approved last year that called for placing a five-cent diesel tax hike on the ballot. The repeal was proposed after the state's trucking lobby withdrew its support for the hike.
Voters instead in November extended a $575 million highway bond program.
