LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Gov. Mike Beebe and highway officials are cautioning drivers to be patient with construction delays from interstate work that will be part of a $575 million program overwhelmingly approved by Arkansas voters.

Highway Commission Chairman Madison Murphy said Wednesday that he expected work on the interstates through the bond program will begin late 2012 or early 2013. The plan was approved by 81 percent of voters in Tuesday's special election.

The measure renews a 1999 bond measure and will pay for repairing 400 miles of interstate in Arkansas. Taxes were not affected by the outcome of Tuesday's vote. It renews a 1999 bond issue overwhelmingly approved by voters.

Beebe said drivers will experience some delays because of the construction, but it will lead to better highways in the end.
