Baby Dies in Newport Shooting, Woman in Critical Condition

NEWPORT, AR - A one-year-old baby has died in a shooting at Newport (Jackson County) that also left the child's mother with gunshot wounds.

That's according to the Arkansas State Police (ASP), which says state troopers and officers with the Newport Police Department were called to the scene shortly after three o'clock this morning.

The ASP says the 911 call reporting the incident came from the injured woman, who told dispatchers she had been shot several times through the door of her home.
 
The baby was pronounced dead at a local hospital and the woman was airlifted to another hospital in critical condition.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Police say a suspect has been detained.
