Burris: Ark. cuts can be made without layoffs

The top Republican in the Arkansas House said Monday that his proposal to cut $21 million from the state's budget can be achieved without laying off state workers or interrupting services, while Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe's office accused the GOP leader of ducking responsibility by not naming specific programs that would be affected.

They would rather bite the hand that feeds them by cutting off merit raises and cost of living raises for people that desperately need them, the state employees. Their answer every year after they have wasted money away is to shaft all of the state employees who are largely underpaid and neglected. These people work hard to ensure the safety and well being of all Arkansans and then at the end of the year they find out no one gives a crap, mortgage is going up, gas is going up, food is going up, but not wages!

Every agency could make cuts in unneeded expenses. For instance, there at least 10 state parks that are under attended that should be closed. Each one has a superintendent, assistant super and several rangers. These people could be employed by the well attended parks when attrition or retirements occur. But don't dare to close a park in any legislators district. They will howl to the heavens. Pork is universal.
