CAMDEN, Ark. (AP) — The Camden City Council is holding off on a vote to call a special election for a sales tax that would fund a new civic center.

The council voted Tuesday night to table the ordinance until next February. The Camden News reports the penny sales tax would go toward bonds to buy a former Walmart building and convert it into a civic center.

Some residents questioned how well the building could be renovated into a civic center. Alderman L.E. Lindsey also noted that similar civic centers in El Dorado and Stuttgart are supported by colleges. He says Camden would be solely responsible for the civic center's operations.

The council voted to give the multi-purpose building committee more time to detail how the new center would be operated.
