Community Training Sessions on HIV/AIDS to Be Held in Three Arkansas Cities

State health officials say there is a great need for early detection, treatment and to stop the spread of the disease.
LITTLE ROCK, AR (News Release) - This week, the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) HIV/STD Section will partner with the Black AIDS Institute to facilitate community training sessions on HIV and AIDS in Arkansas in Conway, West Memphis, and McGehee, all in recognition of National HIV Testing Day (NHTD).

National HIV Testing Day is an annual observance every June 27th to raise public awareness about the impact of HIV on the lives of Americans and the importance of preventing, testing for, and treating HIV and AIDS. The Arkansas Department of Health HIV/STD Section will facilitate training sessions this week to give Arkansans the information and resources they need to address HIV and AIDS in their communities.

“Over 5,000 people in Arkansas are living with HIV and hundreds more are diagnosed each year.” explained Dr. Nathaniel Smith, Interim Director of ADH.

“There is a great need for early detection and treatment not only for the health of individuals with HIV, but also to stop the spread of the disease,” said Smith. “The purpose of the training sessions is to make community members aware of the impact of HIV and AIDS in Arkansas and provide the tools they need to help stop the spread of the disease in their areas.”

The ADH HIV/STD Section and the Black AIDS Institute invite all community members to the free training session in their area.  The trainings will be accompanied by other events throughout the day including free, confidential testing for HIV and Syphilis.  Attendees can further raise awareness of each event via Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #KnowNow.
