HOT SPRINGS, AR - Hot on the heels of spring break, DeGray Lake Resort State Park is gearing up for another holiday weekend. Easter Sunday is March 31st and the park is ready to welcome guests with special programming. Saturday will be a great day for families with a variety of springtime activities. The day will begin with a nature hike on the Island trail followed by two craft programs. In the morning, guests will get to make recycled paper bookmarks with seeds embedded in the paper. When you are done using your bookmark, just tear it up and bury the pieces in the soil. Soon you will have lovely wildflowers or tasty herbs to enjoy. After lunch learn how to make blown eggs. Blown eggs have the yolk and white removed leaving the shell intact for you to decorate. An interpreter will demonstrate the technique. Then guests will be able to exercise their artistic skills on eggs that interpreters will have prepared ahead of time. The craft programs are free and all materials will be provided; however, registration is requested. Guests can register for these activities at any time by calling the lodge at (501) 865-5850.

After you are done creating your Easter masterpieces, see if you can win a prize in a pair of spring trivia games. In “Are you my Mother?” guests will see if they can identify birds just by looking at their chicks. Clues will be provided. In “Edible or Awful?” test your knowledge of wild Arkansas plants. Can you guess which plants are safe to eat and which would send you to the hospital?

In the evening join an interpreter on a relaxing sunset cruise, or stick around after the sun goes down and see what species of owls live at the park. We’ll even try to call one up and see if they answer. Reservations for the sunset cruise must be made in advance and there is a fee of $9.00 for adults and $5.00 for children ages 6-12. Children under 6 are free. Registration starts at noon the day before- to register please call the marina at (501) 865-5840.

On Easter Sunday guests can begin their day at 7:00am with a sunrise worship service offered by the Red River Baptist Association on the Lodge lawn. This service is non-denominational and dress is casual. All are welcome to attend. If you are a gardener, be sure to stop by and share your “Gardening Gossip” after the service. An interpreter will host a discussion on gardening techniques and trends followed by a tour of the lodge garden. The tour will be led by the lodge’s master gardener who will share some tips on garden planning for all four seasons.

For Sunday lunch, the Shoreline Restaurant will offer their delicious Easter buffet with a special appearance by the Easter Bunny. Pictures with the Easter Bunny are free. Finally, at 2:00pm will be the park’s signature “Easter Eggstacy” event with over 1,000 eggs hidden around the lodge for youngsters to find. All children 12 years old and younger are welcome to participate. Children will be separated into several age groups and the hunt starts promptly at 2:00pm so don’t be late! After the hunt a variety of backyard style games will be held. Think you are too old to hunt for Easter eggs? New this year for the older crowd, the park will also be offering an island Easter egg hunt at 2:30pm on Sunday. This hunt is only for those ages 13 and older. Adults are even welcome to search for eggs with or without children. Guests for this program will take a short boat ride out to an island where they will search for eggs hidden in challenging spots. There will be fewer eggs than the children’s hunt, but better prizes inside. The island egg hunt is free, but seating is limited and guests must register starting at noon the day before. Registration will be taken at the lodge front desk (501) 865-5850. Children ages 13 to 17 may join the island egg hunt unaccompanied with a parent’s signature. Release forms will be provided before the tour departs.

All Easter programs are posted online and printed activity sheets can be found at several area visitor centers including DeGray Lake Resort State Park’s own visitor center located at the entrance to the park.
