FULTON, Ark. (AP) — People who live near a southwest Arkansas coal-fired plant may hear loud bursts of noise as workers check equipment over the next few weeks.

SWEPCO spokesman Scott McCloud says steam will be blown through pipes at high pressure to test the unit's turbine at the John W. Turk Jr. Power Plant near Fulton.

McCloud told the Texarkana Gazette that the noise could sound like a jet engine as steam moves through the lines.

The newspaper says the 600-megawatt plant is 93 percent complete and that it will help meet growth in electricity demand in 2013 and beyond.

Construction began in 2008.

The electric utility reached a settlement last year with environmental groups that have long opposed the plant.
