GRAVELLY, Ark. (AP) — GOP congressional candidate Marcus Richmond says he's dropping out of the race in Arkansas' 4th district and that he's endorsing former rival Tom Cotton.

In a statement Wednesday, Richmond said he's enjoyed traveling the district and meeting Arkansans, but that he's ready to do all he can to help elect Cotton.

Richmond dropped out of the race one day before candidates can begin filing paperwork for this year's election. The Republicans vying for the 4th district seat include Cotton, Beth Anne Rankin and John Cowart.

Richmond says Cotton is the "clear choice" in the race for the seat, which was left open after Democratic incumbent Rep. Mike Ross said he wasn't running for re-election.

Two Democrats — D.C. Morrison and state Sen. Gene Jeffress — are seeking their party's nomination.
