STUTTGART, Ark. (AP) — No one placed a bid on the historic Riceland Hotel in Stuttgart when it went up for auction this week.

The hotel opened at Third and Main streets in 1923 and its guests included Ernest Hemingway and Clark Gable. It was added to the 2005 Most Endangered Historic Places List after preservationists found that a lack of maintenance threatened the integrity of the building.

The hotel went up for auction Wednesday because its taxes have been delinquent for the past five years. The minimum bid had been set at $19,760.

The Stuttgart Daily Leader reports that there's a 90-day wait for properties not sold during the auction. After that, the hotel will be available once again through a negotiated sale process with the Arkansas Commissioner of State Lands.

property taxes in this state are too damned high...This hotel aside, I feel so sorry for older people who've worked all their lives to own their own property and save up a little money to live on, only to have it sucked up by property taxes and when they can't afford to pay them any longer, they have to give it up and live in a home...At some point we should be able to be exempt from property taxes after paying on that property for so many years...I don't know why anyone would want to retire here...They better be rich if they do..
