Buffalo National River Partners Sponsors “Ozark Historic Cemetery Stroll,” Saturday, April 13, 11:00 a.m. with Abby Burnett
Buffalo National River Partners invite you to stroll through some of the historic cemeteries of the Ozarks on Saturday, April 13. Local researcher and author, Abby Burnett, will be your guide on the event through the Carver Cemetery, the Hasty Cemetery and the Sand Hill Cemetery. AETN featured Abby, in “Silent Storytellers,” a documentary about cemeteries and stone carvers in the Ozarks. On our walk, we’ll learn about the carvers of the gravestones as well as lives of some of the locals who pioneered the area.
We will meet at 11:00 a.m. at Carver Cemetery, where, after touring the cemetery, we’ll eat lunch at Carver Campground and then caravan to Hasty Cemetery. We’ll then caravan to our last stop at Sand Hill Cemetery. At each of these points you will see examples of stone carvers’ work during the 19th century such as tablet style stones, grave houses and folk art tombstones. Please bring a sack lunch, water and, for your comfort at lunch, a lawn chair. To get to Carver Cemetery, go down AR Hwy. 123 and turn at the Gene Rush W.M.A. sign (brown sign). You will see the cemetery on your left. In case of rain the event will be postponed to a later date.
Buffalo National River Partners exists to protect, preserve and promote the Buffalo National River.
