Preliminary Report Released on Arkansas Nuclear One Accident

Nuclear Regulatory Commission describes incident as an "unusual event" that happened after a breaker explosion.
RUSSELLVILLE, AR - A preliminary report has been released on Sunday's deadly industrial accident at Arkansas Nuclear One in Russellville.

According to the report, a turbine lift failed during movement of the main turbine generator stator (called Unit 1), causing a loss of power to the unit.

Unit 2 later entered a report of an "unusual event," which occurred after a "breaker explosion in the protected area."

The report does not indicate exactly what the breaker explosion was or what caused it, and goes on to say the full extent of structural damage on Unit 1 is still unknown.

As we reported Sunday, one person was killed in the accident and four others were injured.

Investigation into the cause of the failure and extent of damage continues.

The State of Arkansas, local authorities, OSHA and the NRC Resident Inspector were all notified of the incident.
