STUTTGART, Ark. (AP) — The Stuttgart City Council is referring a 1-cent sales tax proposal to voters.

The council set the election for Feb. 14, when voters will decide whether to retire $11.6 million on a tax proposal approved in 2005. The second question on the ballot will be for the proposed 1-cent tax.

The Stuttgart Daily Leader reports the tax would raise about $16 million that would go to streets, parks, public safety, administration, sewer improvements, mosquito control and other uses.

Stuttgart Mayor Marianne Maynard says she has asked city departments to list their needs as the first step toward getting the proposal approved.
