TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) — City leaders in Texarkana have authorized a special election in June for voters to consider the extension of a bond issue that would pay for about $9 million in street repairs.

The Texarkana Board of Directors voted 6-1 Monday night to call a special election on June 12.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that voters will be asked to extend an existing property tax of 2.5 mills. They'll also be asked to approve that proceeds from the bonds be used for street projects.

The city's financial adviser, Carey Smith, says it will take 21 or 22 years for the city to pay off the bond issue, if approved by voters.
