HARRISON, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Department of Health officials are urging residents to get their pets vaccinated after another animal tested positive for rabies in Boone County.

The Harrison Daily Times reports a skunk tested positive last week for the disease, bringing to three the number of rabid skunks reported in the county this year. A bull also has been confirmed with rabies there.

Veterinarian Beverly Chevallier says a man who lives near Valley Springs called her and said a skunk had bitten one of his dogs. The veterinarian told him to shoot the skunk and refrigerate it so it could be sent for testing.

Health officials say of the 11 dogs exposed this year, only one had been vaccinated against rabies.

Of the 18 cats exposed last year, none had been vaccinated.
