LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is treating its 10,000th multiple myeloma patient.

The Little Rock-based research hospital announced the milestone Wednesday at its highly-regarded Myeloma Institute on the UAMS campus.

The institute has been operating since 1989 and was the first in the world devoted exclusively to treating the disease and its related illnesses. Myeloma patients from each state and from more than 50 countries have been treated at UAMS.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the blood's plasma.

Dr. Bart Barlogie is the founder and director of the institute.
