FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — The University of Arkansas office of diversity affairs has received a $121,520 grant to look into why fewer Hispanics than whites in Arkansas are prepared for college.

The Arkansas Department of Higher Education awarded the grant, which also is geared toward finding a way to close the gap.

Assistant Vice Provost for Diversity Luis Restrepo says only 50 percent of Latinos take the ACT, a standardized college prep test, compared with 80 percent of whites. Restrepo says Hispanic students who do take the ACT tend to place significantly lower than whites.

Restrepo says educational barriers, socio-economic differences, language and immigration status may contribute to the gap.

He says officials want to know if and how the schools' institutional cultures are related to the low percentage of Hispanics taking the test.

Many of the Hispanic students, legal or illegal, are treated with the same bias shown here in the comments. My family settled in the New Mexico area before there were any pilgrims and yet are treated as if we should go back to Mexico. Being Hispanic does not signify illegal entry into the United States. I am proud to be American, but sad to see what some people think being American is.

They are saying it takes that kind of money to ask questions of people. What is there to study. Do a poll , what ever, so here we go we want to give them free college now we want to throw away more money to find out why they are not ready to take it. Give it to someone that is ready to use it and doesn't have it.

You want to know why fewer are prepared ! I would say it's likely because 99.9 percent of them are not legal. But do we care , NO! we only want to make sure we give away every thing we can to any one except those that may deserve it. Or that have paid in all that money by way of taxes .
