Update: Escaped Inmate from Garland County Jail Caught in Florida

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, FL - After nearly a month on the run, an escaped Garland County Jail inmate has been caught in Florida.

According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office website, Derrick Estell, 33, and his girlfriend Tamara Upshaw, 25, were booked in shortly after midnight.

Estell escaped from the jail in Hot Springs on July 28. Authorities say a car was waiting for him outside.

Further details from Garland County Sheriff's Office news release:

Estell and Upshaw were taken into custody without incident by Santa Rosa County sheriff’s deputies and the U.S. Marshals fugitive task force last evening around 11 p.m. They were located at a residence in Santa Rosa County.

Working with cooperating individuals, Garland County Sheriff’s Investigators Russ Severns and Terry Threadgill were able to pin point Estell and Upshaw’s location. Investigators contacted the authorities in Florida and within a few hours, they were taken into custody.

Estell had escaped our custody on July 28 with the assistance of Upshaw and others after returning from the Arkansas Department of Corrections for a court appearance. 

Two other individuals were also taken into custody for their involvement in the escape and are awaiting court hearings. 

It is unknown if any more arrests are expected, as the investigation is ongoing.

Details on the extradition process and additional details on the arrest are pending.   

The Garland County Sheriff's Office is holding a news conference at 1 p.m. to reveal additional information.
