Four Former Hogs on MLB Opening Day Rosters

Four former University of Arkansas baseball players are on Major League Baseball opening day rosters as the season begins on Monday.
FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Four former University of Arkansas baseball players are on Major League Baseball opening day rosters as the season begins on Monday.

Craig Gentry (Texas Rangers), Eric Hinske (Arizona Diamondbacks), Cliff Lee (Philadelphia Phillies) and Drew Smyly (Detroit Tigers) will open the season on the 25-man roster for their respective clubs.

Gentry begins his fifth season in the big leagues with the Rangers. Gentry has played in 216 games as a big leaguer and has a .279 career batting average with two homers, 43 RBI and 32 stolen bases.

Hinske is starting his 12th season in the Major Leagues and his first as a member of the Diamondbacks. Hinske has played in 1,335 games and has a .250 career batting average with 136 home runs and 516 RBI.

Considered one of the best left-handed pitchers in the game, Lee is starting his 12th season overall and his third with the Phillies. Lee has pitched in 284 games, including 280 starts, and has a career record of 125-78 with a 3.59 ERA.

Smyly begins his second season with the Tigers after a successful rookie year. Smyly pitched in 23 games, including 18 starts, in his rookie season and went 4-3 with a 3.99 ERA. Smyly helped Detroit to an American League title and an appearance in the World Series.

In addition to the four former players on active rosters, three former Razorbacks start the season on the 40-man roster for their respective teams. Logan Forsythe (San Diego Padres), Dallas Keuchel (Houston Astros) and Duke Welker (Pittsburgh Pirates) all start the season on the 40-man roster for their teams.
