For the second straight week, senior right-hander Kelsie Armstrong has been named the Southland Conference’s Pitcher of the Week. This marks the sixth time that Armstrong has earned the honor.
Over the past week, the Central Arkansas softball team played five games, compiling a 4-1 record. Armstrong went 3-0 during that time to lead the way for the Bears (15-6). She recorded three starts during the week, going the distance in all three to push her total to 12 complete games in 13 starts. Over the three starts, and one relief appearance, Armstrong totaled 20.1 innings pitched and struck out 17 batters while giving up only one run for an ERA of 0.34. Opposing batters managed 10 hits off of Armstrong for a batting average of .145.
Armstrong, who threw a no-hitter last week, collected two one-hitters this week. On Friday, Armstrong shut down Chattanooga, throwing six innings of one hit softball while walking two and striking out six. Against Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Armstrong held the Norse to one hit over seven innings of work, giving up six walks and striking out three.
Armstrong and the Bears have a final non-conference tune-up tonight at 6:00 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff before opening Southland Conference play this weekend. The Bears play host to Stephen F. Austin in a double-header slated to begin at 11:00 Saturday morning. The series will close with a single game on Sunday, with the first pitch set for noon.
