As the temperature continues to drop, there are some things you need to do to prevent some major problems, like freezing pipes.

Experts say there are certain things you should keep in your car just in case you get stuck including: water, snacks, a flashlight, blanket, and a cell phone charger. AAA says it's also a good idea to have at least a half tank of gas so your gas line doesn't freeze.

As temps continue to drop, LaDell Lawson from the Home Depot says you need to winterize your home. "We're sold out of water heaters from pipes busted on water heaters," said Lawson.

Lawson says Arkansans are gearing up for the cold weather. Wednesday, they had 700 faucet covers; Thursday they were completely sold out.

He says if you put a water sleeve on your water heater now, you won't have to worry about the expensive problem of your water heater pipes freezing.

Thursday, LaDell was spending a big chunk of his day helping customers, like Chung Lee, figure out what they need to protect their pipes. "Make sure everything is covered, plants and pipes," said Lawson.

But when it comes to pipes, location makes a big difference. "If there are any pipes close to the outside of your house, get them covered. You don't have to go under the house,” said Lawson.

When it's this cold outside experts say you should bring your pets inside. Also, open doors under sinks to allow heated air in the house to warm pipes. Keep indoor faucets, hot and cold, at a slow drip. Cover plants such as camellias with an old sheet and for plants taller than 3 feet, black plastic.
