Bill to Change Scholarship Eligibility Requirements Advances in Senate

LITTLE ROCK, AR -- A bill that would allow students who get their GED to also qualify for the Arkansas Lottery Scholarship advanced in the Senate Education Committee on Wednesday.

As it stands now, non-traditional students are not eligible.

Supporters say many of those students left school because of some hardship, whether personal or family, and are more than likely enrolled in college already.

"Because if we don't allow this, we are punishing students for success, we're punishing students who want to finish school early," Sen. Robert Thompson said.

The bill now goes to the Senate floor.
